Questions, answered

What is my birth flower and birthstone?

Pick your birth month above. Each month has one or two traditional birth flowers (for example, October is marigold and cosmos) and at least one birthstone (October is opal, with tourmaline as an alternate).

Where do birth flowers come from?

Birth flowers come from Roman and Victorian traditions of giving seasonal flowers, especially the Victorian "language of flowers," where each bloom carried a meaning. Most birth flowers are in season during their month.

Who decided the modern birthstones?

The modern US birthstone list was set by the jewelry industry (now Jewelers of America) in 1912 and updated in 1952, 2002 (tanzanite), and 2016 (spinel). Older traditional lists trace back to the twelve stones on the breastplate of Aaron described in the Book of Exodus.

Can a month have more than one birthstone?

Yes. June (pearl, alexandrite, moonstone), August (peridot, spinel, sardonyx), October (opal, tourmaline), November (topaz, citrine) and December (turquoise, zircon, tanzanite) all have more than one official stone.
